Obviously those people haven’t met Bernie Little and his sidekick\, Chet. This is the kind of can’t-put-it-down\, gotta-read-one-more-chapter crime/suspense/mystery novel that only a few writers can pull off. I think of Michael Connolly\, John Sandford\, and Lee Child\, but Spencer Quinn has something those books don’t: the narrator is a wonderful dog who sees (and smells) things his detective partner can’t. Chet is brave\, and has a wonderfully optimistic view of life in the American Southwest; he often assures devoted readers (like me) that he is feeling “tip-top.” We should all be so lucky\, and Bernie is lucky to have such a devoted friend. Chet is positive that Bernie will eventually sell all those Hawaiian pants he has in storage\, and if it’s good enough for Chet\, it’s good enough for me. Don’t want to oversell the book by claiming it’s up there with Melville and Joyce\, but when you want a tip-top tale\, Bernie is your guy and Chet can both tell a tale and wag one. This is no cutie-poo “cozy” mystery\, either. There’s some hard bark (as well as barking) here. Humor? Got it. First-class whodunit? Check. Good writing without any show-off bells & whistles? Yes and yes. DESCRIPTION:Internationally acclaimed poet Brenda Hillman will visit the University of Connecticut in March as the 59th Wallace Stevens Poet\, part of UConn’s longstanding Wallace Stevens Poetry Program. \nHillman will give a public reading on Wednesday\, March 11\, at 7 p.m. in the Konover Auditorium of the Dodd Center\, 405 Babbidge Road\, Storrs\, CT 06269. The event is free and open to the public and will feature readings by award-winning UConn student poets prior to Hillman’s appearance. \nHillman will also give a special reading for E.O. Smith High School students on Tuesday\, March 10\, as part of the program’s commitment to literary outreach and arts education. \nHillman is the author of numerous poetry collections\, including Practical Water\, which won the LA Times Book Award for Poetry; Seasonal Works with Letters on Fire\, winner of the 2014 Griffin Poetry Prize and the Northern California Book Award for Poetry; Extra Hidden Life\, Among the Days; and her most recent collection\, In a Few Minutes Before Later. In 2016\, she was named chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. \nHer honors also include the 2012 Academy of American Poets Fellowship\, the 2005 William Carlos Williams Prize for poetry\, and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. \nHillman’s visit is organized by the Wallace Stevens Poetry Program Committee in UConn’s Department of English in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special event to reflect on America at 250! \nAuthor Damien Cregeau will present material from this new book\, Portraits of Patriots: Colonel John Trumbull and Five Fellow Patriots From Connecticut in the American Revolution. The book tells the fascinating stories of the famous artist as he not only struggles to become an artist but also fights in combat as an aide de camp. It also illustrates his talented but troubled sister\, Faith Trumbull Huntington\, her husband\, General Jedediah Huntington\, his brother\, Colonel Ebenezer Huntington\, and Samuel Webb of Wethersfield\, who served as an aide de camp to Generals Putnam and Washington\, fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill and eventually held the Bible at Washington’s Presidential Inauguration in 1789. \nThis presentation brings these stories to life with a wonderful set of paintings by John Trumbull as well as the artwork of Faith (some of which are in the collection of the Connecticut Museum) and others. \nCopies of the book will be available for purchase by the author. \nTickets\n$15 General Admission\n$10 for Connecticut Museum Members\nFree for Connecticut Museum Member levels $150+ \n
