Join us for a lovely evening with B.A. Shapiro!

On the heels of a number of “inventive and entertaining” (The Boston Globe) historical thrillers set in the art world, including the New York Times bestseller The Art Forger, New England Book Award winner B. A. Shapiro deftly veers into new terrain with Metropolis (Publication Date: May 17, 2022; $27.95), a spellbinding contemporary novel of psychological suspense. Set in a century-old urban storage warehouse, the masterful narrative is told from multiple characters’ points-of-view as Shapiro explores timely issues of our current cultural moment.

Serge is a homeless street photographer who sleeps in his storage unit; Marta is an illegal immigrant who seeks refuge from ICE by hiding in hers; Liddy camps out in hers after escaping her abusive husband; Jason is a lawyer who uses his unit as his office; Rose is the office manager who takes kickbacks; and Zach is the building owner is an ex-drug dealer. They are of different faiths, different races, and different life experiences. They are young, and not so young. They are rich, poor and somewhere in the middle. When a fateful accident occurs, these six very different people, with seemingly no link to each other beyond the Metropolis Storage Warehouse in Cambridge, Massachusetts, see their precariously balanced lives torn apart. But was it an accident or something else? Suicide, perhaps? Murder?

Before becoming a novelist, Shapiro taught sociology at Tufts University, and beneath its spellbinding mystery, Metropolis is a genre-defying work that explores the effects of social class at birth on the life chances of the characters, reflecting on the myth of “pull yourself up by the bootstraps” in present day America. Key issues—class, race, sexual identity— play out as these people of diverse backgrounds confront crises that their advantages and disadvantages either help or hinder them in overcoming. As they dip in and out of each other’s lives and face their own demons—as well as discover the truth behind the accident—the novel traces how their interlocking narratives connect them and tear them apart.

Shapiro’s novels have been called “gripping” (O, The Oprah Magazine), “addictive” (Redbook), “thrilling” (Entertainment Weekly), and “the real thing” (USA Today). According to Mary Morris, “In Metropolis Shapiro is the literary equivalent of a master juggler, writing with tremendous compassion and a wonderful knack for storytelling. Her characters whirl together within the confines of a self-storage unit and, though at its core is a mystery, its beating heart is their stories. It is a dazzling performance and a novel that will stay with me for a long time to come.” Learn more about Shapiro here.
