A Little Harmless Fun: Author Lary Bloom On Artist Sol LeWitt

September 19 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

$10
Mark Twain House

Arts writer Frank Rizzo talks with author Lary Bloom about Sol LeWitt: A Life of Ideas, a new biography of the Hartford-born, New Britain-raised abstract, conceptual and minimalist artist.

Bloom and LeWitt were friends and neighbors in Chester. Bloom’s new biolgraphy of one of the most important and influential artists of the 20th Century takes an up-close and personal look at the man who revolutionized traditional practices of how art is made and marketed.

“As art historians have said there have been two great artists who have come out of Hartford: [19th century landscape painter] Frederic Church and Sol LeWitt,” says Bloom. “But LeWitt, who loathed the personal spotlight and — as demonstrated at an infamous surprise birthday party for the artist at the Wadsworth Atheneum  —  had a complex relationship with a city that did not always embrace challenging art and that had once rejected its native son.

Rizzo,  who has covered the theater scene for  The Hartford Courant, Variety, and The New York Times, hosts the A Little Harmless Fun series for The Mark Twain House & Museum.  Read his work on his website Showriz.
