Two Connecticut Poets: Antoinette Brim-Bell and Sophie Cabot Black

This annual poetry reading features two Connecticut-based poets—
Antoinette Brim-Bell, author of These Women You Gave Me, Icarus in Love, and Psalm of the Sunflower, is a Cave Canem Foundation fellow. Her poetry, memoir, and critical work has appeared in various journals and magazines, as well as, in anthologies including Villanelles, Stand Our Ground: Poems for Trayvon Martin and Marissa Alexander, Critical Insights: Alice Walker, 44 on 44: Forty-Four African American Writers on the 44th President of the United States, Not A Muse, Just Like A Girl: A Manifesta, and The Whiskey of Our Discontent: an anthology of essays commemorating Ms. Gwendolyn Brooks, winner of the 2017 Central New York Book Award for nonfiction. Brim-Bell is a Professor of English at Capital Community College.
Sophie Cabot Black’s first poetry collection, The Misunderstanding of Nature, received the Poetry Society of America’s First Book Award. Her poetry has appeared in numerous magazines, including The Atlantic Monthly, The New Republic, The New Yorker, The Paris Review, and Poetry. The Descent, a second collection of poems, received the 2005 Connecticut Book Award, was also nominated for the 2005 Colorado Book Award and was subsequently chosen as a “hot pick” on MSNBC’s program, Topic A With Tina Brown . Her latest collection The Exchange (2013), received critical acclaim including a starred Publisher’s Weekly, and on All Things Considered was reviewed as “the book for you”.
